Do Medicare Reform Bills Measure Up?
Sunday July 6, 2003
The Medicare reform bills now before Congress fall short of providing America’s seniors with the level of medical coverage provided to 8.5 million federal workers, reports the Washington Post. The health plan chosen by most federal workers, including members of Congress, pays about 80 percent of total prescription drug costs, while citizens covered by Medicare under the proposed reform bills would be reimbursed for no more than about 55 percent of their drug costs. On the other hand, single federal employees pay an average of about $90 a month for their health plans, while Medicare costs a single person about $58 a month.
