Eagle Feeders Often Serve Last Meals
Sunday July 6, 2003
People who feed eagles may be serving the majestic birds their final meal, warns the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Leaving food for eagles draws them into urbanized areas, where they all too often fall victim to threats like cars and, worst of all, power lines. One electrocuted eagle in Alaska was found still clutching a turkey drumstick handout in its talons. Eagles, lured by the promise of an easy meal, have also died after being accidentally trapped in dumpsters and have been compacted along with the trash in dump trucks.
