Prison Rape Reduction Bill Passes Senate

Tuesday July 22, 2003
On July 21, 2003, the U.S. Senate passed a bill sponsored by Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL) that is designed to reduce the rape of inmates in America’s prisons. The bill, titled the Prison Rape Elimination Act of 2003, would establish a bipartisan National Commission to study prison rape at the federal, state and local levels. “Whether you’re a conservative or a liberal, we all agree that punishment for a criminal defendant should be set by a judge and should not include sexual assault,” said Sen. Sessions. Read more about this bill here. Also see: U.S. Prison Population Tops 2 Million and Go to Jail! Now Go Back to Jail!
