Supreme Court to Decide Pledge of Allegiance Change

Tuesday October 14, 2003
Will Americans continue to be allowed to say “one nation under God” when they recite the Pledge of Allegiance? According to this story in the Houston Chronicle, the Supreme Court will decide just that as they consider a suit brought by a California man who challenged the pledge on behalf of his 9-year-old daughter. In June 2002, the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco acted on the suit by declaring the Pledge of Allegiance unconstitutional based on the separation of church and state provision of the First Amendment.
