9-11 Report to Call For New Cabinet-level Intelligence Post
Sunday July 18, 2004
No less than 15 federal agencies currently gather intelligence on potential terrorists and terrorist attacks. Problem is, says the 9-11 Commission, those 15 agencies are not so good at sharing that intelligence. Now, CNN is reporting that the commission will recommend the creation of a single, Cabinet-level position assigned to oversee and coordinate all federal intelligence gathering efforts. "Our current intelligence community was created in 1947 to fight an enemy that no longer exists," said Rep. Jane Harman, the ranking Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, in the CNN article. "Our 15 agencies now operate with different rules, cultures, and databases. That must change." (Also See: About the President's Cabinet)
