Iraqi-U.S. Forces Launch Biggest Mission Since Saddam Hussein
Sunday May 29, 2005
You take 40,000 Iraqi troops, back them up with 10,000 American troops, send them all out to find terrorists, AKA "insurgents," and you get Operation Lighting. As reported here by Reuters, Operation Lightning's goal is to seal off all major routes into Baghdad, then perform a building-by-building search for anti-Iraqi Arab fighters and Iraqi guerrillas. U.S. and Iraqi military leaders planned Operation Lightning in response to insurgent bombings and ambushes that killed more than 700 people over the last month. At least 70 U.S. troops were killed over the same period.
