Civil War Submarine H. L. Hunley Had “Stealth” Feature
Wednesday June 22, 2005
Conservators at the Naval Historical Center (NHC) have discovered that the Civil War submarine H. L. Hunely featured an early form of stealth technology. The previously unknown feature called a deadlight, allowed light to enter into, but not escape from the partially submerged vessel. The deadlights ran across the top of the sub, serving like watertight skylights. “Every aspect of the submarine's design is thought out to maximize her ability as a stealth and functional weapon," said Sen. Glenn McConnell, chairman of the Hunley Commission in a press release. "She is literally 50 years ahead of her time."
