Daylight Savings Time Extension Reduced by Congress

Friday July 22, 2005
House and Senate negotiators, working a compromise energy policy bill, have agreed to an amendment that would start daylight-saving time (DST) three weeks earlier, on the second Sunday in March, and extend it by one week to the first Sunday in November. The House had proposed extending DST by a full month in the fall and another full month in the spring.

As reported here by CNN, farmers complained to Senators that a full two-month extension of daylight savings time would harm their livestock, and airlines said it would complicate scheduling of international flights.

"We ought to take a hard look at this before we jump into it," said Sen. Larry Craig (R-Idaho), in the CNN story.

At least one organization, End Daylight Savings Time, has organized to oppose any extension of daylight savings time.
