DeLay Leaves House Leadership Post after Indictment

Wednesday September 28, 2005
After being indicted for allegedly taking part in a campaign-finance conspiracy, U.S. House of Representatives Majority Leader Tom DeLay temporarily resigned his post today. A Travis County grand jury in Austin, Texas handed down the indictment, charging DeLay with conspiracy in a plot to launder $190,000 in corporate campaign donations through the Republican National Committee.

In a CNN report, DeLay is quoted as telling reporters, "I have done nothing wrong. I have violated no law, no regulation, no rule of the House."

In a prepared statement, DeLay stated, “I have notified the speaker that I will temporarily step aside from my position as majority leader pursuant to rules of the House Republican Conference and the actions of the Travis County district attorney.”

House Republicans selected Rep. Roy Blunt of Missouri to replace DeLay during his absence. Read the complete CNN report…
