California Rep. Admits Taking Bribes, Resigns

Monday November 28, 2005
U.S. Rep. Randy "Duke" Cunningham (R – California, 50th) resigned his office on Monday after pleading guilty to taking $2.4 million in bribes in exchange for help in securing Defense Department contracts.

The 68-year-old Cunningham, an 8-term Congressman, admitted taking cash and big-ticket gifts from various defense contractors between 2000 and 2005.

Quoted in this CNN story, a tearful Cunningham told reporters "The truth is I broke the law, concealed my conduct and disgraced my office. I know I will forfeit my reputation, my worldly possessions -- most importantly the trust of my friends and family."

As part of his plea agreement, Cunningham also admitted to taking part in conspiracy to commit briber, mail and wire fraud and tax evasion. Aside from forfeiting his $2.5 million home and about $1.8 million in cash and ill-gotten booty, Cunningham could face up to 10 years in prison and $350,000 in fines. Sentencing has been set for Feb. 27, 2006. [Full CNN story...]
