Bush Defends Medicare Prescription Drug Plan

Sunday February 26, 2006
President Bush on Saturday defended the Medicare prescription drug program against charges by consumer groups that it is wasteful and confusing for most older and disabled Americans.

"More than 25 million people with Medicare now have prescription drug coverage, and hundreds of thousands more are enrolling each week," said Bush in his weekly radio address. "This new coverage is saving seniors money on their drug premiums: the typical senior will end up spending about half of what they used to spend on prescription drugs each year."

In his address, the President highlighted themes he will be addressing at the annual gathering of state governors this week in Washington, D.C. Along with health care, issues to be discussed at the gathering of governors include: U.S. innovation and competitiveness, national energy strategy and the war on terror.
