Black Holes are ‘Green’

Tuesday April 25, 2006
NASA researchers have reported that black holes are the “greenest,” most fuel efficient engines in the universe.

"Just as with cars, it's critical to know the fuel efficiency of black holes,” said one of the lead researchers in a NASA press release.

The researchers based the conclusions of their report on Chandra X-ray Observatory views of nine supermassive black holes near the centers of distant galaxies.

“If a car was as fuel-efficient as these black holes, it could theoretically travel over a billion miles on a gallon of gas,” said one of the co-authors of the NASA report.

Of course, when that day comes, we can guess that gas will cost about a trillion dollars a gallon.
