DoD Suspends Latest Iraq War Troop Deployment

Tuesday May 9, 2006
In what could be a hint of things to come, the Department of Defense (DoD) quietly announced yesterday that the 3,500 troops of the 2nd Brigade, 1st Infantry division, now stationed in Germany, will not be deployed to Iraq this month as scheduled.

The decision, according to DoD was made after an assessment by commanders of security conditions on the ground in Iraq. “In consultation with the Iraqi Government, commanders continue to assess the situation to ensure sufficient force levels to best support the Iraqi government,” stated DoD in a press release.

DoD reports there are currently about 133,000 U.S. troops in Iraq, supporting an Iraqi Security Force of more than 254,000 members.
