Reports of Gunfire at Capitol Building: All Clear

Friday May 26, 2006
Latest Update: DC Police reported that the sounds originally thought to be gunfire, probably came from pneumatic hammers being used by workman in repairing an elevator in the Rayburn Office Building. Officials have now reopened the building, after issuing an “all-clear” notification.

Reports of gunfire in the garage of the Rayburn Office Building, housing offices of members of the House of Representatives, led the District of Columbia Capitol Police to shut down the entire Capitol Building complex early today.

CNN reported that while emergency vehicles swarmed the area, no evidence of gunfire or injuries had been detected, and work continued as normal on the Senate’s side of the Capitol. “The police do not seem overly concerned that there might be a gunman loose at this point,” said CNN’s Ted Barrett.

DC Police initially reopened the Rayburn Building, but later reinstated a total lockdown on the Capitol Complex in order to continue their investigation.
