Where to Find Federal Assistance Programs

Tuesday May 29, 2007
At any time, the U.S. government provides over 1,400 programs offering discretionary assistance or benefits. Most people call these grants, but "grants" is far too general a term. Under the general category of "domestic assistance," are 15 types of assistance -- 7 financial and 8 non-financial -- available including surplus equipment, training, guaranteed loans, and even some grants.

Unlike programs such as Social Security or Medicare, from which funds are distributed automatically to qualifying citizens, these discretionary programs require formal application, consideration and approval. Believe it or not, the Federal Government can, at times, be very careful how it spends your money.

While many of these benefits are available only to state, local and tribal governments, and private organizations, many others offer benefits directly to individuals and families.
