Federal Minimum Wage Increases Today

Tuesday July 24, 2007
The federal minimum wage officially increases to $5.85 per hour today, marking the first hike in the wages of the nation's lowest paid worker since September 1997, when the rate at was set at $5.15 an hour.

Today's 70 cent increase comes as a result of the Fair Minimum Wage Act of 2007, which increases the federal minimum wage in three yearly steps: to $5.85 per hour effective today, July 24, 2007; to $6.55 per hour effective July 24, 2008; and to $7.25 per hour effective July 24, 2009.

The federal minimum wage was established by the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938, with the minimum hourly wage set at only 25 cents. Today, the minimum wage is administered and regulated by the Wage and Hour Division of the U.S. Department of Labor.

If you need new labor law posters, I thought this website was good. Electronic versions of the Federal Minimum Wage Poster were free and the nice laminated posters are inexpensive.
