To Get $300 Tax Rebate, Kids Must Have SS Number

Friday February 22, 2008
Among the many IRS Facts about the 2008 Stimulus Payments -- the tax rebate checks -- parents should note the fact that dependant children, including newborns, must have a Social Security number in order to qualify for the additional $300 per child tax rebate.

While getting a Social Security number for children is totally optional, it is still a good idea. Aside from the $300 tax rebate bonus, having Social Security numbers for you kids allows you to open banking and savings accounts in their names, add them to your health care coverage and qualify them for government services and benefits.

According to Social Security officials, the best and easiest time to get a Social Security number for a newborn is when you give the hospital information for the child's birth certificate. When you give information for your baby’s birth certificate, you will be asked whether you want to apply for a Social Security number for your baby. If you say "yes," you need to provide both parents' Social Security numbers if you can. Even if you do not know both parents’ Social Security numbers, you can still apply for a number for your child. If you wait to apply for a number at a Social Security office, there may be delays of up to 12 weeks while Social Security workers verify your child’s birth certificate with the state.

Children age 12 or older requesting an original Social Security number must appear for an interview at a Social Security office, even if a parent or guardian will sign the application on the child's behalf.

What Does it Cost? There is no charge for a Social Security number and card. If someone contacts you and wants to charge you for getting a number or card, or for any Social Security service, you should report them to Social Security by calling Toll Free: 1-800-269-0271.

Complete details on Social Security numbers for children can be found in Social Security Publication No. 05-10023 (.pdf).

Pansy — If you file a 2007 federal income tax return, and meet all the other requirements, yes, the IRS will calculate your rebate and mail it to you.

(8) Sherrita says:

Hi,
I have a family member who did not file taxes this year because she is out of work. She receives aid from the government and I believe that would be qualifying income. Well she was not sure if she qualified and what she needed in order to file. The deadline has passed is there any extension for filing so that she could get a rebate? She has 7 children, would all of them qualify for the rebate also? Thank you for your response in advance.

(14) J. S. Tucker says:

I just found out that we will not get the child share of 300 each because they are 17 and 18. My 18 yr old worked but we still used him as a dependent so he does not qualify as well. It seems my 18 yr old has been totally left out of this un fairly. Do I have this correct ?

May 7, 2008 at 8:01 am
(15) Robert says:

14 - That is correct. 17 is the cut-off. To include all dependents, of all ages, would have driven the cost of the program so high that no rebates at all could have been given.

I have two kids in college and do i not get some rebate on them. I support them 100% as their job is going to school.

May 9, 2008 at 12:58 pm
(18) Robert says:

17 — No. Only dependents under age 17 qualify for the $300 rebate. Had rebates been sent to all dependents, no matter their age, the cost would have sunk the entire rebate plan. Nobody would have gotten a rebate.

my son turned 17 on 11/25/07 and lives at home. He has a social security number and we claim him as an exemption. When I check on the website it says we will only get $1200 and not $1500. Why is that or is it just an error?

June 23, 2008 at 10:51 am
(30) Robert says:

Jim — $1200 is the maximum rebate amount.

June 26, 2008 at 11:10 pm
(31) virginia thompson says:

I checked the web site for the status of our rebate. According to the report, we are not receiving the $300 for a dependent child. We claimed our daughter on our taxes. She is 22 and a full time student. Her status shows that she is not receiving anything because we claimed her. So, why are we not getting the additonal $300?

June 27, 2008 at 6:48 am
(32) Robert says:

Virginia — Children over 17 do not qualify for the extra $300. This rule is clearly stated by the IRS in several locations.

(33) taryn says:

My father is wondering about his rebate check. He collects ss checks as well, and he knows he is getting his check, but the paper he got says unless he owes back child support which he might. If this is the case, will he get the check, or will someone else?

(34) karen says:

(35) Katie says:

Ok, so I’m 19 and I worked for a year and filed taxes, but my mom put me as a dependent because I was in school. My question is if I worked and filed taxes but was put as a dependent, could I still get a rebate check?

August 29, 2008 at 6:48 pm
(36) Paul Ayton says:

My wife and I are both British but have been working in the US and paying US taxes for many years. One of my daughters was born here in the US and has her own SSC number. My second daughter was born in the UK. US authorities currently refuse to issue a SSC number to her. Instead, we have to use a Tax ID number to claim her as a dependent on our federal tax returns. We have not received a tax rebate for our second daughter. Do we have any grounds for appeal? She is a dependent on our annual tax returns.

(37) Robert says:

My son was born in the U.S. My daughter in Ukraine. I am an american citizen, my wife a Ukrainian citizen, but also with Permanent Resident Status in the U.S.

I can confirm for the last poster, that yes, you will not get the rebate for your child without an SSN. And like you, my daughter simply cannot be issued a SSN. USCIS has hosed her paperwork, and it takes sometimes up to 5 years for them to straighten out a mistake. They are slow on regular applications, but they get completely confused about mistakes, in fact, sometimes you have to sue them in federal court to spur them to action.

My daughter is 8. She cannot get the SSN. Federal Court costs $5000 just for the lawyer. We will spend the 5 years writing letter after letter, waiting for the solution.

Meanwhile she won’t get the tax rebate. If you happen to get a SSN in 2008, you can still get the rebate in 2009, you only missed out on the ‘advance rebate’ part of it, you can still get the money.

But, if like me, you are engaged in a multiyear struggle to get USCIS to correct their paperwork error…you probably won’t get it.

(38) Trish says:

We have 2 children and I am married. There was an error the return with the kids SSN (now Fixed) and we did not recieve the rebate amounts for the 2 children at the time of filing. I was told thaton the 2008 tax return there will be an opportunity to claim the credit??? Robert is this true

(39) Shauna says:

Robert, I filed single with a dependent and only received $600. I also made over $3000.00. Shouldn’t I have received $600? If so what should I do?

(40) Disgusted says:

They say social security numbers are voluntary. Do you really want to be owned by the government? When you get a social security number for your child you are signing them up to be servants of the government, and obligees to slave for our national debt.

Jasmine — No 2009 rebate checks are expected. President Obama is backing tax cuts in the form of reduced withholding from worker’s paychecks.

Hi..
My Mom claimed me on her 2008 taxes, I was 17 at the time and did not make $3000 in 2007. I filed my taxes in january 2009 and they told me that because I did not receive a 2008 stimulus rebate that I may get one in 2009. Will I still qualify for that if my mom had claimed me last year???

I am on SSDI. I do not make near enough to pay taxes. Last year they gave me a $300 rebate check. Should I expect one this year since they’re going by 2007 rules? Please answer to my e-mail if possible…as well as your blog. I think it’s very helpful! Thank you!

God bless you (even if the answer is something I’d rather not hear).
