Bush Calls on Congress to Ban Online Drug Sales
Speaking to a national radio audience on Saturday, the President called the online availability of addictive drugs one of the main causes of the growing trend of abuse of prescription drugs by youth. "The Internet has brought about tremendous benefits for those who cannot easily get to a pharmacy in person," he said. "However, it has also created an opportunity for unscrupulous doctors and pharmacists to profit from addiction."
President Bush also touted the success of his administration's past efforts to reduce the rate of drug abuse by young people, highlighted by a 25 percent decline in marijuana use and a 64 percent drop in the use of methamphetamine by America's teens.
Along with government, Bush called on the nation's entertainment and sports stars, as well as teachers, pastors and parents to serve as role models to young people. "The Federal Government will continue to do its part to keep our young people safe, and I urge all Americans to do the same. Our children deserve nothing less," he concluded.
