Robert's US Government Info BlogMore Major Flooding Ahead, Says NOAAThe serious flooding that soaked over 250 communities in a dozen states last week could be just a taste of what's in store for the rest of spring, according to NOAA's National Weather Service (NWS).
Several factors, including record rainfall and snow packs, now melting and sending rivers and streams over their banks, will continue to contribute to above-average flooding risks, according to the federal forecasters. "We expect rains and melting snow to bring more flooding this spring," said Vickie Nadolski, NWS deputy director in a press release. "Americans should be on high alert to flood conditions in your communities. Arm yourselves with information about how to stay safe during a flood and do not attempt to drive on flooded roadways – remember to always turn around, don’t drown." NWS' Spring Flooding Outlook predicts the potential for record flooding in the Mississippi River basin, the Ohio River basin, the lower Missouri River basin, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, most of New York, all of New England, and portions of the West, including Colorado and Idaho. (Flood Danger Map) On the other hand, says NWS, record rains will not be enough to bring relief to ongoing drought in the southern Plains. Seasonal forecasts for warmth and dryness suggest drought will expand northward and westward this spring. (Drought Outlook Map) Do You Need Flood Insurance? Think your home is "high and dry?" Since 1978, the National Federal Flood Insurance Program has paid out over $11.6 billion in claims, 25 percent of which went to owners of flood damaged property located outside of designated "flood prone" areas.
