If you really watch what you eat, you’ll want to read the USDA’s just released report, Nutrient Content of the U.S. Food Supply, 2005 (.pfd). This exhaustive report, published about every 10 years, measures the amount of nutrients available for consumption in the U.S. food supply.
For each major food group, you'll find information on food energy available and the energy-yielding nutrients -- protein, carbohydrate, and fat, cholesterol, dietary fiber, 10 vitamins, and 9 minerals.
According to the report, more calories are available for consumption, and Americans are consuming more calories than they did 10 years ago.
