Nearly 105 Million Tax Rebate Checks Sent So Far

Wednesday July 9, 2008
In the 10 weeks since the payments began on April 28, the Treasury Department reports sending out over 104.8 million tax rebate checks totaling nearly $86.1 billion.

According to the Treasury, standard rebate payments via direct deposit or mailed paper checks will continue as scheduled through mid-July. However, the Treasury advises that some tax returns will require additional time to process and to compute a stimulus payment amount. For these returns, stimulus payments may not be issued according to the published schedule, even if the tax return was processed by April 15. In these cases, the tax rebate payment will be issued approximately 2 weeks after the tax return is ultimately processed by the IRS.

In the case of tax returns received by the IRS after April 15, it will generally take a minimum of six weeks after the return is processed for the rebate to be sent.

Need Rebate Help? If you have questions about the timing or amount of your tax rebate, the IRS suggests calling their Tax Rebate Hotline at 1-866-234-2942, or visiting the local Taxpayer Assistance Center nearest you.
