FEC Suspends "Millionaires' Amendment" Enforcement

The Federal Election Commission (FEC) has officially suspended its enforcement of the so-called “Millionaires’ Amendment” to the Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act of 2002, after the Supreme Court ruled it an unconstitutional violation of the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

The “Millionaires’ Amendment” allowed all opponents of congressional candidates who used $350,000 of their own money to finance their campaigns to triple the $2,300 per election individual campaign contribution limit for their own campaigns.

In June, the Supreme Court ruled 5-4 that the provision violated wealthy candidates’ First Amendment rights to freedom of speech. [Read the details…]
