By the end of September, every public and private K-12 school, preschool and post-secondary school in the nation should have received a federally-distributed Public Alert Radio. The radios sound an alarm to alert school personnel about hazardous weather and other emergencies, even when other means of communication are disabled.
Commonly known as NOAA Weather Radio All Hazards, the Public Alert Radios provide alerts and safety steps on a wide range of emergencies such as; tornados and severe storms, flash floods, hazardous materials threats and child abductions.
Distribution of more than 279,000 of the Public Alert Radios is a joint effort of FEMA, NOAA, Homeland Security, the Department of Education, and the Department of Health and Human Services.
