The Costly, Costly Courthouse
Saturday October 4, 2008
The federal courthouse in Los Angeles is far too small and fails to meet modern security standards. Flashback to 2000, when the General Services Administration (GSA) drew up plans for a new courthouse complex to be completed in 2006, at a cost of around $400 million. As we now approach 2009, while almost $30 million has been spent, no construction has taken place, the completion date has been pushed to 2014 and the estimated cost to taxpayers has ballooned to over $1.1 billion. The Government Accountability Office (GAO) places some blame and offers some solutions, none of them very good.
