Press Any Number for Spanish

Wednesday November 12, 2008

With the best of intentions and the help of taxpayers, the U.S. Department of Education has developed and launched the USALearns.gov web site, a site the Department of Education says will help approximately 11 million adult immigrants learn English. That's great, as long as the language the immigrants speak now is Spanish. Currently, and with no apparent plans for expansion, USALearns.gov is available in English and Spanish only. Interestingly, the instructions in both the Spanish and English modules, are almost entirely in English.

Created as part of the 26 border security and immigration reforms announced by President Bush in August 2007, the USALearns.gov site is intended to help immigrants and newly naturalized citizens with limited English skills expand their employment opportunities in the United States.

"America's limited-English adults will now have readily available materials to improve their literacy and help them become more productive workers, better parents, engaged community members and active citizens," said Troy Justesen, assistant secretary for the Office of Vocational and Adult Education in a press release.
