Government Web Site Getting $18 Million Upgrade
A taxpayer-funded government web site intended to help taxpayers see how their tax dollars are being spent will undergo a major upgrade at a cost of $18 million taxpayer dollars.
The General Services Administration (GSA) announced last week that it had awarded a contract valued at $17,948,518 to a Maryland-based company for a redesign of the Recovery.gov web site, the site intended to help Americans see exactly how the money allocated by the 2009 economic stimulus package -- the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 – is being spent.
To be called “Recovery.gov 2.0” the redesigned web site “will use innovative and interactive technologies to help taxpayers see where their dollars are being spent,” said James A. Williams, Commissioner of GSA’s Federal Acquisition Service in a press release. “Armed with easy access to this information, taxpayers can make government more accountable for its decisions.”
Taxpayers should be fully “armed” by mid-October 2009, when the new, $18 million-improved Recovery.gov must be online according to the contract.
Recovery.gov, should not be confused with the even more revealing USASpending.gov, which reports data about all types of government spending, including contracts, grants, loans, and spending across government agencies.
