The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has announced plans to create the nation's first center dedicated to helping states and communities provide support and services for older lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) individuals.
According to HHS, the new Resource Center for LGBT Elders will assist elder services providers at the state and community level in developing and providing culturally sensitive services for the nation's 1.5 to 4 million LGBT individuals age 60 and older. Services to be provided will include programs to aid older members of the LGBT community in planning ahead for future long term care needs.
Qualifying state and local service providers will soon be eligible for grants of $250,000 per year from the federal Administration on Aging for establishing local LGBT elder resource centers. Eligible entities will include public-private nonprofit organizations with experience working on LGBT issues on a national level.
