Reading is not so "fun-damental" and can be downright dangerous when it comes to two books just recalled by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).
On Jan. 8, the CPSC announced the recall of the children's cloth-paged book, "Big Rex & Friends," published by St. Martin's Press of New York City and manufactured in China. Each book contains a sewn-in red plastic dot that contains high levels of lead, according to CPSC. "Lead is toxic if ingested by young children and can cause adverse health effects," said the commission.
Also on Jan. 8, CPSC recalled a series of 9 home improvement books published by Oxmoor House, Inc., of Birmingham, Alabama, and sold in home improvement stores and bookstores nationwide from January 1975 through December 2009. The books, said CPSC, included electric wiring instructions which, if followed, could cause electrocution.
Both "Big Rex & Friends," and the shocking home improvement books can be returned to the publishers for full refunds, according to the CPSC.
