The U.S. Department of Commerce has proposed the creation of a service to keep Americans updated on the effects of climate change and global warming "in order to make the best choices for their families, communities and businesses."
To be operated by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the new climate change service would provide the public and policy-makers with constantly updated information on climate change-related information, including "sea-level rise, longer growing seasons, changes in river flows, increases in heavy downpours, earlier snowmelt and extended ice-free seasons in our waters."
"By providing critical planning information that our businesses and our communities need, NOAA Climate Service will help tackle head-on the challenges of mitigating and adapting to climate change," said Commerce Secretary Gary Locke in a press release. "In the process, we'll discover new technologies, build new businesses and create new jobs."
NOAA launches climate change Web portal: Hoping to demonstrate its ability to assemble and provide timely climate change information, NOAA also launched Climate.gov -- http://www.climate.gov - featuring an interactive "climate dashboard" showing changes over time in critical areas of global climate, including temperature, carbon dioxide levels, sunlight, sea level and Arctic sea ice.
