IRS Has $1.3 Billion Waiting for 1.4 Million People

The Internal Revenue System (IRS) has a total of $1.3 billion in refunds waiting for some 1.4 million people who failed to file tax returns in 2006. To get their share, the non-filers must file a tax return for 2006 by April 15, 2010.

According to the IRS, the median unclaimed 2006 refund is $604.

"In cases where a return was not filed, the law provides most taxpayers with a three-year window of opportunity for claiming a refund," stated the IRS in a press release. "If no return is filed to claim the refund within three years, the money becomes property of the U.S. Treasury."

That three-year window for 2006 closes on April 15, 2010. The IRS reminds that there is no penalty for filing a late tax return - even three-years late - in order to claim a refund.

Important: Taxpayers filing to claim a refund for 2006 will have their payments held if they have not filed tax returns for 2007 or 2008, and the 2006 refund will be applied to any amounts still owed to the IRS and may be used to satisfy unpaid child support or past due federal debts such as student loans.

A complete state-by-state breakdown of the number of persons owed a refund from 2006, along with tips on how they might be able to maximize those refunds can be found on the IRS Web site.

Tax forms and instructions for 2006 and other years can be downloaded from the Prior Year Forms and Publications page of IRS.gov or requested by calling toll-free 1-800-TAX-FORM (1-800-829-3676).
