The story of a woman who claims she was hit by a car because Google Maps provided her with bad walking directions leads all vote-getters in the July 2010 Most Ridiculous Lawsuit Poll conducted by the U.S. Chambers of Commerce.
The Chambers of Commerce conducts this monthly poll as part of its Faces of Lawsuit Abuse campaign intended to show how frivolous and abusive lawsuits negatively affect small businesses and average families.
A few other bizarre entries in the July 2010 Most Ridiculous Lawsuit Poll include a woman who claims she was fired from her job for being too attractive and a college graduate who sued her own father for failing to pay her college costs.
These suits may bring you a smile, they are no jokes to U.S. small businesses, which pay over $98 billion in lawsuit-related liability costs every year. According to the Chambers' report Small Businesses: How the Threat of Lawsuits Impacts Their Operations, six in ten small business owners say the fear of lawsuits makes them feel more constrained in making business decisions generally, and 54 percent say lawsuits or the threat of lawsuits forced them to make decisions they otherwise would not have made.
