Big Politics, Big Money: So you and your beloved are getting married, but you don't want a bunch of toasters or blenders. How about a donation in your names to the Barack Obama re-election campaign, instead?

In a "creative," if not just plain weird way of raising funds, the Obama re-election campaign crew has created an online Obama Event Registry where engaged couples can ask for campaign contributions instead of more traditional wedding gifts.

"Instead of another gift card you'll forget to use, ask your friends and family for something that will go a little further: a donation to Obama for America," suggests the Obama Event Registry.

It's not just for weddings either. Any "big day" can be designated as a reason for gifting the Obama campaign. "Register your next celebration -- whether it's a birthday, bar or bat mitzvah, wedding, or anniversary--with the Obama campaign," urges Team Obama. "It's a great way to show your support for a cause that's important to you on your big day."

Hopefully, the Obama Event Registry automatically enforces the current legal limits on campaign contributions by individuals.

Show You the Money: While we don't know how much of it came via the Obama Event Registry, the Obama campaign had raised a total of $255.2 million through May 31, 2012, with $196 million coming from individual contributors, according to the Federal Election Commission. In comparison, the Romney campaign had raised $120.6 million, with $112.7 million coming from individuals.

The contribution figures above do not include fund-raising "spikes" claimed by both the Romney and Obama campaigns immediately following the Supreme Court's decision upholding President Obama's health reform care law.
