Supreme Court Splits on Ten Commandments

Monday June 27, 2005
In two 5-4 decisions, the Supreme Court ruled today that the display of the Ten Commandments is constitutionally acceptable in the Texas capitol building, but not in a Kentucky courthouse. As reported here by CNN, the Court ruled that the display of the Ten Commandments in the Kentucky case violated the separation of church and state clause of the First Amendment. Legal analysts suggest that the rulings were designed to allow courts some leeway in determining the constitutionality of displaying the Ten Commandments on public property on a case-by-case basis.
