Harriet Miers Withdraws Supreme Court Nomination

Thursday October 27, 2005
In a letter to President Bush, Harriet Miers today officially withdrew her nomination for Associate Justice to the Supreme Court.

As reported here by CNN, Miers letter to President Bush stated she was withdrawing because she was “concerned that the confirmation process presents a burden for the White House and its staff and it is not in the best interest of the country.”

President Bush accepted Miers’ withdrawal commenting, “It is clear that senators would not be satisfied until they gained access to internal documents concerning advice provided during her tenure at the White House -- disclosures that would undermine a president's ability to receive candid counsel.”

Bush vowed to name a new nominee “in a timely manner.”

The President had nominated Miers to replace retiring Associate Justice Sandra Day O’Connor.
