Federal Agents Smuggle Dirty Bomb Material into U.S.
As reported by CNN, the agents bought the nuclear material from a commercial source, then posed as employees of a fake company to sneak it across the borders.
The GAO report is just one of three sent to Congress on the subject of smuggling and detection of nuclear material.
A dirty bomb, while incapable of producing a nuclear detonation, uses conventional explosives to disperse potentially deadly radioactive material into the atmosphere, creating the effect of nuclear fallout without the nuclear blast.
