High Court to Rule on Greenhouse Gas Regulation

Monday June 26, 2006
How the U.S. Government addresses global warming, if at all, may be determined by the Supreme Court, which decided on Monday to rule on whether the government must regulate the emission of greenhouse gases, like carbon dioxide.

During the early days of the global warming debate, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) decided that it did not have the authority under the Clean Air Act to regulate emissions of greenhouse gases and, even if it did, it probably wouldn't.

A dozen states, three cities and a raft of environmental advocacy groups joined together to appeal the EPA's decision to the Supreme Court. Environment Guide Larry West offers an in-depth analysis of what he says could be "the most important environmental case the Supreme Court has ever considered."
