Brief History of the State of the Union Address

This evening, President George Bush will deliver his seventh State of the Union Address. On Jan. 8, 1790, President George Washington delivered his and the brand new nation's first State of the Union Address. Both presidents, and all presidents in between, gave their addresses because the Constitution requires the president to "from time to time," update Congress on the "State of the Union."
