The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) has given its approval for the construction of the Rockies Express-West interstate gas pipeline, designed to help meet the growing demand for natural gas in states east of the Rocky Mountains.

When completed in late 2007, the Rockies Express-West interstate pipeline will carry massive quantities of natural gas through 713 miles of a 42-inch diameter pipeline from Weld County, Colorado to a distribution point in Audrain County, Missouri. [Map]

As to environmental concerns, FERC notes that the route of the pipeline will parallel existing utility corridors, running mainly through sparsely populated areas. In addition, FERC will require that all companies working on all phases of the project adhere to measures designed to prevent or mitigate any potential adverse environmental impact identified by FERC.

"This pipeline is one of the largest Greenfield projects the Commission has certificated in recent years. It promises to bring reliable and affordable gas supplies to U.S. consumers while helping address the disparity in prices for producers in the Rocky Mountain region," stated FERC Chairman Joseph T. Kelliher, in a press release. "The Rocky Mountain region is a major supply source for the Lower 48 states and its production continues to grow. In addition, the amount of proven reserves, critical for increased production, is growing as well. The increased access to Rocky Mountain supplies afforded by this project will help to offset the production decline in other areas, including the Gulf of Mexico."
