HUD Extends Katrina Rent Payments

Thursday December 6, 2007
Thousands of victims of Hurricane Katrina will continue to have their rent paid by the federal government through at least March 1, 2009, according to the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).

Originally set to end on Sept. 1, 2007, the rent payments were extended for an additional 18 months under the government’s new Disaster Housing Assistance Program, administered by HUD for the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). HUD took over the program from FEMA on December 1.

To date, about 28,000 victims of Katrina continue to receive government rental housing assistance and case management services, including job training and child care.

Amazingly, HUD believes that some Katrina victims who are eligible for assistance under the Housing Assistance Program have still not been contacted. Individuals who believe they may be eligible for the program, but do not think they have been contacted, should call HUD’s referral call center at 1-866-373-9509.
