IRS Admits Tax Rebate Mistakes Were Made

Thursday May 15, 2008
Newsday Issues Correction: Newsday has issued a correction to its story regarding mistakes made by the IRS in distribution of the economic stimulus rebates. In correcting its article, Newsday stated that the actual number of rebates sent to the wrong individuals was 1,500, not 15,000 as they had originally reported.

Newsday reports that the IRS has admitted to mistakenly sending as many as 1,500 tax rebate checks and direct deposits to the wrong people. Newsday quotes an IRS representative as stating that persons receiving misdirected direct deposits must report the mistake to their banks immediately, while those receiving paper checks made out to other people, must mail the checks back the the IRS. In addition, stated the IRS spokesman, any money spent before the mistake was noticed, must be returned to the IRS.

At the same time, AP has reported that the IRS had also admitted to incorrectly failing to pay as many as 350,000 households the $300 per child rebate promised in the tax rebate program. AP quotes an IRS spokesman as promising that letters would be sent to all filers who failed to get the proper child credit rebate, and that checks paying the child credit would be mailed to those filers in July.

According to Newsday, the IRS has also set up a toll-free telephone hotline to answer questions about the tax rebates at: 1-800-829-1954.

As of late Wednesday, the IRS had not yet issued an official press release on the rebate problems, or posted information on their tax rebate web site.

(3) Theresa says:

The site is ridiculous just like those who work at the IRS. Depositing into wrong accounts? I’ve tried calling to inquire when we will receive our check, no answers, nothing except IF we’re eligible, our check might be mailed around May 30th. Excuse me, we had direct deposit on our return.

(4) Robert says:

3 - What bugs me is that the IRS has neither addressed or even acknowledged the mistakes on their own rebate web site. They seem to be taking the stance that they are just little bumps in the road, nothing to worry about, everything will be find. People are going to have lots of questions about the errors and how they will (or have) affect their rebates, but the IRS isn’t answering. Lack of accountability, anybody?

(5) Kat says:

the part that bugs me is that I was supposed to receive a deposit by the end of yesterday…& guess what…nothing!!!! the IRS web site is no good because according to them: “Specific information about your Stimulus Payment is not available”. What a bunch of BS…what more should I expect from the IRS? (obviously)

May 17, 2008 at 8:37 am
(6) Robert says:

5 - One thing I’ve learned is that the dates the IRS lists are — at best — the dates they mail or transmit the rebates. Mail can take a week to reach you and direct deposit is by no means “instant” at most banks. If your DD rebate is transmitted late on a Friday, for example, it may not show up in your account until Monday, depending on the bank.

(8) bill williams says:

Well, if you screw up on what you owe the irs, they are after your butt. If they screw up, thats fine. They got you by law so you are just a pawn for the gov. to get your money to give to foreign countrys.

May 19, 2008 at 10:59 pm
(9) ron steele says:

Well they sure didn’t waste time taking my tax payment out of my account. Where is the money that was supposed to have been put into my account on the 9th. How do we contact them and let them know that they probably gave it to someone else. Probably an illegal immigrant.

(10) LaTonya says:

I have a question, my husband and I both work and filed married/jointly. we got $900 back and were supposed to get $1500 back, because that would be $1200 for married/jointly and $300 extra for a child, when will be receive this the extra $600 we’re missing, because the IRS has admitted they are making mistakes on this….

(11) Anthony says:

May 21, 2008 at 11:51 am
(12) Leshia says:

I can’t believe all of the negative nonsense I am reading. We received our rebate according to the schedule as did both of my adult children. How about some support for our government -after all, it’s a gift - there’s a lot of checks/deposits to make and of course there will be a few glitches. Would I be so understanding if I was still waiting on mine - YES.

May 22, 2008 at 9:44 am
(13) Jessica says:

I think that the IRS should not have stated that our rebates will be deposited no later than… This makes it very hard for those of us that are single parents and counting on that money!! I was supposed to get mine no later than May 9 and counted on it so I went and wrote checks for gas to get back and forth to school and guess what THEY BOUNCED!! So now there are other fees that were owed and had to go to check and go to pay them!! The IRS website is a damn joke!!!

May 22, 2008 at 10:05 am
(14) Robert says:

Jessica — If the IRS had not at least offered a delivery schedule, they would have had 170 million people calling the next day to ask “When?” Belive it or not, most of the rebates are being paid on time or even ahead of schedule.

May 22, 2008 at 1:41 pm
(15) Cindy says:

Website is not very useful. I paid taxes for 2007 can’t use phone service…Because I didn’t get a refund and 0 does not work….

(16) charlene says:

yeah i went through hr block i did do direct deposit and they tell me it has to paper check.

(17) Doug Solis says:

Leisha - This might be a “gift” to you, depending on your income, but to most of us it is a return of our OWN money, which we EARN. It is every Wage Earners right and duty to pay the LEAST amount of tax they legally can. Why, in this current economic climate, when WE are asked to tighten our belts, the Government isin’t cutting their own spending? Maybe we shouldn’t be paying out “GIFTS” to people who don’t even pay taxes and give a higher rebate to the ones who do.

the irs and the gov. are abunch of scamers

May 27, 2008 at 3:51 pm
(20) Mil says:

I just hope the IRS fix the problem soon because everyone are waiting. I did a DD on my refund and according to the schedule posted on the website, I was suppose to get it on May 9th. I’ve tried to call the IRS and see what was going on but no luck. Until now, I am still waiting or just give up on the Rebate. So much for that “GIFT”.

May 27, 2008 at 8:55 pm
(21) debbie says:

My husband recieved his (600.00) on the date stated for DD. I however, have not recieved mine and it should have been DD. Because I am his wife, does that means I will get a papercheck?? the site is not helpful and I followed the instruction. I can’t figure out if I’m suppose to get one or how much or when.

May 29, 2008 at 6:57 pm
(22) John says:

What a joke this government is. Bush figured he was making Millions in his oil companies by raising the price on barrels of oil and thinks paying off the American people will make him look good. When are the people of this country going to wake up?!?!

Don’t be surpised if the price a gasoline drops significantly once Bush is out of office. He’s still got 6 months or so to load his pockets at the expense of the American people.

I was supposed to recieve my stimulous check May 9th and guess what??? No such luck. Just chalk this up as another one of Bush’s blunders in ruining this country.

May 29, 2008 at 8:02 pm
(23) Robert says:

Yeah! Maybe the next president won’t try to pass out any of this lousy, stinking rebate mon… wait a minute.

(27) Ssgts Wife says:

My husband is a Marine of 15yrs,we have 3kids(7-17)and live in Japan but are expecting our stimulus. We did get our joint amount but not the $600 for our 2 younger kids.I havent been home to see family in 2yrs and hubby just got back from 2nd deployment. We REALLY need the $600 for tickets because the cost of them are just stupid!Am I to understand because we filed extension due to his deployment that our $600 will be DD in july??? Anyone know? Thankyou 4 the help!

June 5, 2008 at 11:05 pm
(28) Rose says:

If the price of gas wasn’t so darn high the people wouldn’t be so upset when the checks or money wasn’t there on time. I haven’t received ours either but what is one to do about it? Getting gray hairs isn’t my way of getting the money any faster.

June 6, 2008 at 12:13 pm
(29) chris says:

my extra rebate is supposed to be here June 16th. So I know that is not late, but I I haven’t receieved my regular rebate yet. Does anyone know if the IRS are combining the two rebates? If they are I am waiting until my date has come and passed.

June 8, 2008 at 4:09 pm
(30) Steve says:

#12, Leshia, get an education. There’s this policy called income transfer. If you paid taxes, you’re getting a rebate. It’s not a gift. But then again, maybe you didn’t pay taxes.

June 11, 2008 at 6:13 pm
(31) Ellen says:

If you owe to anything in the gov’t or are in litigation of any kind, that check will be applied to the debt even if they say you’ll get the check. Does anyone know about this? I can’t even get though on the phone to a real person!

June 14, 2008 at 5:42 pm
(32) Don says:

Where are everyone’s checks, no one seems to have received theirs! Government nonsense once again!!

June 16, 2008 at 1:13 pm
(33) Leandra says:

I haven recieved my check yet, but I doubt I will get anything back. The government is sending out money to help, yet they are gonna to take the money right back to pay for debts owed. Why do you think they wanna make the effort of sending out money just to take it right back? I am a single mother of 1, I haven relied on the check cause I think it is b.s. They wanna help me than they should send what they say they are gonna send, not say they are gonna send it and take it right back, and put it in their pockets.

June 19, 2008 at 3:40 pm
(34) Karen says:

Our family won’t be receiving our rebate due to an error on the part of the IRS; my last name is hyphenated (Maiden-married) and the IRS records only have my maiden name associated with my SSN. Funny how they have no problem collecting my taxes though!!!

June 19, 2008 at 6:10 pm
(35) Robert says:

Karen — That can also prevent you from getting your Social Security benefits when the day comes. You need to make sure that SS has your married name.

June 21, 2008 at 2:14 pm
(36) Kristie says:

I thought that they promised to pay $300 per child! Why is it that I only was paid for one child when I filed the two of my children!? It’s always something!!!!!

June 25, 2008 at 5:46 pm
(37) AJ Walker says:

So…If I failed to pay the IRS I would be charged outrageous penalties and interest until payment was rendered. However, I doubt all the families who didn’t receive their rebate on time or received an incorrect amount due to the child credit blunder can expect fair and equitable treatment by this governing agent. Just my thoughts.

June 25, 2008 at 6:36 pm
(38) kristie says:

what i was understood when all this rebate check was coming, that single parents gets 600.00 and 300.00 per child and married get 1200.00. why did the gov. tell everyone thats what we would get that amount, but when you recieve your check its a lower amount…im a single mother of 2 boys but i can only claim 1 child and my ex claims the other, i recieved my check the day after i was suppose to recieve it,which was good…i was suppose to recieve 900.00 which would of help out so much, but the gov. had different plans i only recieved 623.00 the gov. took out of my 600.00 because i receieve 3197.00 on my income tax return…i think that is b.s….raising 2 kids with just my income is hard enough…dont tell me im going to get a certain amount and then take away 277.00 once i get my check!!!!! IM MAD

June 26, 2008 at 7:04 pm
(39) Jeff says:

We’re not getting our stimulus check because of my wife’s hyphenated name. It is correct on her SS Card. While this sucks for us, we should be able to apply the stimulus amount to our 2008 return. The IRS needs to fix this, but remember it is a “gift” from the government. Not being able to pay your light bill etc., can’t be blamed on the IRS. You need to budget better, and not spend money that you don’t already have in hand! It would be nice to have the extra cash, but we made DAMN sure we didn’t have to rely on a government handout! geez! come on people!

Ok they screwed something up, but just try to get anywhere whith this. And since me and my wife of 20 years filed jointly hers is not going to get payed. $1200 is alot of gift to us. I know ill never be able to get it–just a gut feeling.

I still have not received my stimulus check (July 23rd.) My browser (Safari) could not open up the IRS “Where is my check” site. My local IRS office will only discuss this in a visit to their office (very inconvenient).

Any suggestions please?

Thanks, in anticipation.

FAQ~What a joke! I filed HOH w/2 Grandchildren as dependants. I only recieved $300. I went to the local IRS office, and they don’t have any answers either, . Whats up with the checks for the “mistake” they made on the child credit rebate. Gas and food prices are running amuck and I could use the extra $$$.

The IRS put money in my account after my taxes were deposited in may. Then turned around at the end of July, and pulled the money back out. No correspondence to say, hey, that was an error. Waited three months to correct the issue, and through off my account. Who do think got stuck with the nsf fees?!. You can’t reach them by phone, and the local office doesn’t take calls. this is crap.

Monumental waste of time and energy. The I.R.S. = “Idiot Retarded Service.”

No wonder government is stagnate and impotent? I spent an hour getting bounced back and forth to the same all-to-happy to insult me, electronic cyborg female voice.

And I was supposed to get a check two months ago? No check, no explaination? No contact number that is any effing good either? Press this, press that, and wait, and wait, and then get cut-off, or sent back into the same maze of lunacy and distorted logic???

Gaawwwdd!! What do these people get paid to do? Can I get paid to do nothing, make mistakes and piss people off too? With benefits?

If I were President my first job would be to abolish the I.R.S. forever!!!!!!!
