Supreme Court Bars Enforcement of Internet Porn Law
In a 5-4 decision the U.S. Supreme Court has blocked the government from enforcing a law intended to shield children from encountering pornography on the Internet. Justices said aspects of the law violated the Constitution's First Amendment guarantee of freedom of speech. The law, the Child Online Protection Act (COPA), passed in 1998, never took effect.
