Spy Not Needed

Guide Extra: 5/31/99

Do you have to be a Chinese spy to learn the design and performance criteria of the W-88 Trident II Mk-5 RV nuclear warhead? Guess not. Looks like all you need is an Internet connection, web browser and the ability to navigate your way to the Federation of American Scientists (FAS) web page called "Complete List of All U.S. Nuclear Weapons."

Don't know how to build a nuclear bomb? The FAS has a 101-level class at "Bombs for Beginners."

What do you think about this? Is it irresponsible of the FAS to publish this kind of information? Notice that the FAS "Complete List of All U.S. Nuclear Weapons" page has been online since at least October of 1997. If the FAS' information were classified or could actually be used to build a working nuclear weapon, the Department of Defense would have seen to its removal by now. Wouldn't they?
