Gun Rights Group Sues US Mayors
Dateline: 12/02/99
The Second Amendment Foundation of Bellevue, WA filed suits Wednesday in US District Court against the US Conference of Mayors and the Mayors of Los Angeles, Miami, Chicago, Atlanta, Cleveland and 18 other cities. The suits allege that the mayors conspired to illegally interfere with interstate commerce and to violate the public's constitutional rights to bear arms and practice self-defense.
The cities named in the Foundation's suits have all either filed suit against the firearms industry or have announced their intent to do so. The cities are seeking damages from gun makers as compensation for crimes committed using firearms. Lawyers for the cities argue that taxpayers have been forced to pay medical bills for persons injured during the commission of crimes involving the us of guns.
Joining the Foundation in the suit is The Shooters Committee on Political Education, Inc. of New York.
