Area Customs Inspectors Dust Smugglers 10 Drug Seizures Made During Howling Wind Storm
El Paso, Tex. -- During the sixth windiest day in the history of El Paso, U.S. Customs Service inspectors held their ground and made 10 drug seizures. U.S. Customs inspectors at the El Paso, Santa Teresa and Fort Hancock ports battled the elements to stop 1,309 pounds of marijuana from making it to its final destination.
A peak wind gust of 69 miles-per-hour at 5:24 p.m. was recorded Tuesday at El Paso International Airport. Consistently high winds throughout the afternoon and evening filled the sky with dust and sand and made it uncomfortable for most people to venture outdoors at all. However, area Customs inspectors stood strong against the elements and had a very successful enforcement day.
"The perseverance exhibited by these Customs professionals in these extreme conditions illustrates just how dedicated they are to stopping illegal contraband from entering the country," said P.T. Wright, acting Director of Field Operations for U.S. Customs in West Texas and New Mexico. "From the hottest days of summer to the chilly winter nights, these Customs professionals are out there 24 hours a day, seven days a week, protecting the American public."
