U.S. Customs Seizes 3,300 Pounds of Marijuana at Port of Miami Seizure comes one day after 20 port workers are arrested for smuggling

Miami, Fla. - The United States Customs Service today announced the seizure of 3,309 pounds of marijuana, found in shipment manifested as "machinery." This seizure comes just one day after the U.S. Customs and the U.S. Attorney's Office in Miami announced the arrest of 20 port workers for conspiracy to import illegal drugs.

The shipment of marijuana was discovered earlier today during a routine targeting and inspection process. Inspectors on the U.S. Customs Service, Contraband Enforcement Team (CET) was examining containers that arrived earlier in the week. One container manifested as "machinery," which arrived last Friday night, aboard the M/V Cagema St. Lucia, coming from Kingston, Jamaica was targeted for inspection.

When inspectors opened that container's doors they observed a giant metal cylinder. Hidden behind that cylinder, inspectors found 65 large bales. An examination of those bales revealed they were filled with marijuana.

All totaled the bales contained 3,309 pounds of marijuana with a wholesale value of $3.2 million.
