The House will next convene for observance of the inauguration of the President of the United States on Saturday, Jan. 20, 2001. However, House Committees are holding hearings on Bush Administration nominations for Cabinet positions:

Committees - Jan. 11, 2001

Armed Services -- 10 a.m. & 2 p.m. Two sessions of confirmation hearing on Defense Secretary-designate Donald Rumsfeld. 106 Dirksen Office Bldg.

(01/05/01) By voice vote, Senators agreed that either the majority or minority leader can declare that a bill or nomination being held up in a committee by a tie vote be advanced to the floor of the Senate for consideration. [See: Senate Adopts Power Sharing Plan]

(01/04/01) The Senate Commerce Committee held a hearing on confirmation of President-Elect Bush's Commerce secretary-nominee Don Evans. A final vote on Evans' confirmation by the full Senate is expected by the end of January. Tentative witnesses at today's hearing include: The Honorable Kay Bailey Hutchison, United States Senate and The Honorable Phil Gramm, United States Senate. [List of all Bush Nominees

(01/03/00) The Senate was sworn including 11 first-term Senators.

(12/11/00) Continuing Resolution--Agreement: A unanimous-consent agreement was reached providing that when the Senate receives from the House the joint resolution funding the Government until Friday, December 15, it be considered read a third time and passed.

(12/07/00) H.R. 2415, Bankruptcy Reform Act, By 70 yeas to 28 nays, 1 responding present (Vote No. 297), Senate agreed to the conference report on H.R. 2415, to enhance security of United States missions and personnel overseas, to authorize appropriations for the Department of State for fiscal year 2000. (On October 11, 2000, the H.R. 2415 conference committee struck all of the House bill after the enacting clause and inserted the provisions of S. 3186, the Bankruptcy Reform Act of 2000), clearing the measure for the President. [The bill was vetoed by President Clinton]

National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day: Senate agreed to S. Res. 386, expressing sense of the Senate regarding National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day. [See: Pearl Harbor Day]

Recent Votes

* On 10/18/00, the Senate by a vote of 86-8, approved the Conference Report on H.R. 4461 -- Making appropriations for Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration and Related Agencies. The bill included an amendment easing trade sanctions on Cuba for the first time in 40 years. Sale of food and medicine to Cuba will be allowed, but U.S. lending institutions are prohibited from financing those sales. President Clinton has promised to sign the bill. 

* On 10/3/00, the Senate by a vote of 96-1 passed S. 2045  The American Competitiveness in the Twenty-first Century Act of 2000. The Bill increases available nonimmigrant H-1B specialty occupation visas for FY 2000 through 2002.

* On 10/2/00, the Senate by a vote of 57-37 passed the Conference Report on H.R. 4733, the Energy and Water Development Appropriations Act, 2001. President Clinton has stated that he will veto the bill because it threatens the environment by failing to fund programs to modernize flood control projects on the Missouri River.

* On 9/19/00 the Senate in a vote of 83-15, passed the bill H.R. 4444, "To authorize extension of nondiscriminatory treatment (normal trade relations treatment) to the People's Republic of China, and to establish a framework for relations between the United States and the People's Republic of China."  [See: Senate Approves PNTR for China] [Click here to discuss free trade with China.]
