Serial Killer Suspect Joins FBI List
FBI Ten Most Wanted

Using dozens of aliases, RAFAEL RESENDEZ-RAMIREZ (Wanted Poster), joins the FBI's list of 10 Most Wanted Fugitives. Resendez-Ramirez is wanted in connection with multiple homicides in Illinois, Kentucky, and Texas. There's a $50,000 reward for his capture, but he is considered armed and very dangerous. House Kills Gun Show Bill
House Roll Call Vote Reporting System

By this roll call vote of 147-280 the House of Representatives killed its own H.R. 2122 - A bill to require background checks at gun shows, and for other purposes. The bill as defeated contained the amendment referred to in the story below.

House Passes "Watered-Down" Gun Control Amendment
House Roll Call Vote Reporting System

In this 12:02 AM EDT roll call vote, the House of Representatives approved 218-211 an amendment President Clinton says creates a "watered-down" gun control bill. The amendment approved by the House requires only a 24-hour waiting period for background checks of buyers at gun shows. The version of the bill passed 51-50 by the Senate required a 3-day background check. A final House vote on the complete bill, including this controversial amendment, is expected sometime Friday.

President Clinton reacted harshly to the late-night passage of the amendment saying, "This vote will not stand the light of day."  For complete details and more reactions from both sides, see this Reuters story.

Y2K Prescription Drug Supply Declared Safe
The President's Council on Y2K Conversion (Text Version)

According to this Press Release, and in a subsequent press conference, the President's Council on Y2K has determined that Y2K will cause little or no impact on Americans' ability to acquire prescription drugs.

Supreme Court Strikes Down Chicago Anti-Gang Law
Cornell University Legal Information Institute

On Thursday June 10, the Supreme Court voted 6-3 to strike down a Chicago, IL law allowing police officers to break up public gatherings if they had reason to believe gang members were present and to arrest anyone who disobeyed their orders.

While the Supreme Court does not have its own web site, the Cornell Legal Information Institute offers the entire decision (Chicago v. Morales), including the Syllabus, the Opinion, by Justice Stevens, the Concurrences (statements in agreement with the decision) by Justices O'conner, Kennedy, and Breyer, and Dissents (statements opposed to the decision) by Justices Scalia and Thomas. The documents are also available for download in .pdf format.
