Census Projects US Population of 292 Million by Jan. 1, 2004

A new American every 12 seconds

As America prepares to ring in the New Year, the U.S. Census Bureau has projected the Jan. 1, 2004, population of the United States will be 292,287,454 — up 2,816,586 or 1.0 percent from New Year’s Day 2003.

In January 2004, the United States is expected to register:

  • One birth every 8 seconds

  • One death every 13 seconds

    Meanwhile, net migration into the United States from other countries is expected to add one person every 25 seconds.

    The result is an increase in the total population of one new resident of America every 12 seconds.
