2:15 - The Pentagon confirmed that a member of the U.S. Army special forces had been killed by enemy fire near the town of Gardez in eastern Afghanistan. No other U.S. troops were injured in the action. The solider, whose name was not released, is the first U.S. service member killed by hostile fire since U.S. operations in Afghanistan began on Oct. 7, 2001. [See: Elite U.S. Army Trooper Killed in Afghanistan (Reuters)] 9:30 am - For the second time since last Thursday, U.S. fighter jets and B-52 bombers attacked a target in the Khost Province thought to still be holding al Qaeda fighters. [See: U.S. Bombs Afghanistan, Omar Still on Loose (Reuters)] 9:00 am - Israel seized a Palestinian ship in the Red Sea found to be carrying 50 tons of weapons, mainly from Iran. [See: Israel Seizes Palestinian Ship It Says Carried Arms (Reuters)] 6:00 am - Afghan and U.S. troops have surrounded a village where Taliban supreme leader Mullah Mohammad Omar is believed to be hiding. Both German and Australian television outlets had reported that Omar had been captured, but the U.S. had no information to confirm the reports.
