Also Today: The U.S. Navy began flying regular air-reconnaissance missions over Somalia looking for evidence that Osama bin Laden's al Qaeda might be reorganizing in that country. 

  • Pakistan was reported to be moving thousands of its troops from positions along the Afghanistan border to Pakistan's border with India. Along the Afghan border, the Pakistani troops had been assisting the U.S. by capturing over 100 fleeing al Qaeda and Taliban fighters.

2:15 - The Pentagon confirmed that a member of the U.S. Army special forces had been killed by enemy fire near the town of Gardez in eastern Afghanistan. No other U.S. troops were injured in the action. The solider, whose name was not released, is the first U.S. service member killed by hostile fire since U.S. operations in Afghanistan began on Oct. 7, 2001. 9:30 am - For the second time since last Thursday, U.S. fighter jets and B-52 bombers attacked a target in the Khost Province thought to still be holding al Qaeda fighters. [See: U.S. Bombs Afghanistan, Omar Still on Loose (Reuters)]

9:00 am - Israel seized a Palestinian ship in the Red Sea found to be carrying 50 tons of weapons, mainly from Iran. [See: Israel Seizes Palestinian Ship It Says Carried Arms (Reuters)]

6:00 am - Afghan and U.S. troops have surrounded a village where Taliban supreme leader Mullah Mohammad Omar is believed to be hiding. Both German and Australian television outlets had reported that Omar had been captured, but the U.S. had no information to confirm the reports. The search for Omar was now focused on Baghran, a town in a remote, mountainous region about 100 miles northwest of Kandahar. [See: U.S. Forces, Afghan Fighters Search for Omar (Reuters)]
