10:00 pm - One U.S. was wounded and as many as 15 al Qaeda fighters were killed in a firefight near Kandahar in southern Afghanistan. [See: Soldier Hurt, 15 Al Qaeda Killed in Afghan Gunfight (Reuters)]

9:30 am - John Walker Lindh appeared before a federal judge in Alexandria, Virginia, and stated that he understood the charges against him and the penalties involved. Walker was also allowed to meet with his lawyers, who complained to the court that Walker had been denied access to counsel for 54 days. A detention hearing was set for February 6. 7:00 am - John Walker Lindh, the American captured fighting for the Taliban and al Qaeda in Afghanistan, is scheduled to appear in an Alexandria, Virginia federal court to answer charges that he conspired to kill American nationals in Afghanistan.
